HOW CAN I DISCOVER MY PASSION?
In my previous article on passion, I gave self-explanatory practical examples, using past events to back it up.
Someone asked a question. The question says, 'How do you discover your passion?'
Let me start by saying this:
Your Passion is not being talented or being that dexterous fellow.
Your Passion is not being an expert in that lucrative field yours. It's not having decades of experience on a job. Your Passion is not also having a wealth of information in a particular field. (Well, you may know much about nuclear bomb making process but that doesn't mean you'll love to produce them all your life!)
.
So, how do you know you're Passionate about something? How do you know, 'THIS IS JUST FOR ME' IN LIFE?
The highlighted points below will give a big clue on how you can discover your passion.
1. WHAT AREA ARE YOU SO INQUISITIVE ABOUT IN LIFE?
Back then, I could tell you many footballers, their clubs, their ranks, perhaps their boots brand and so many other informations. I always wanted to know some deep things about some key players. Ronaldinho was like top on my list. It drove me to the extreme. (TILL DATE, some of those skills haven't left me.)
.
Gently ponder on this questions below:
-What are you so curious about in life?
-What information drives you to pay any kind of sacrifice to get?
-What steals your sleeping time in the night, your lunch hour during the day or the period you need to hang out with friends?
2. WHAT CAN YOU DO OVER AND OVER AGAIN EVENTHOUGH YOU WEREN'T PAID FOR IT?
I know some Speakers and some of my Leadership mentors who can train, teach and impact others for free eventhough they won't get paid before or after the event.
Chimamada Ngozi Adichie, the elegant writer. So good to the point that she drove Chinua Achebe to make a remarkable comment about her. He said, 'Adichie came ALMOST FULLY MADE.'
She said something amazing about writing in one of her interviews.
Chimamada Ngozi Adichie: ...if I hadn't been fortunate enough to be published and read, I will still be writing. You wouldn't just know who I was. It's about passion; It's my true love. It makes me happy.
Yeah. That's the point. Doing what you love not so much because of the monetary benefit involved.
So, find out what's that one thing that makes you happy and fulfilled. What can you do for hours without being bored? What's that activity that doesn't make you rest until it's accomplished? Is it teaching other people, writing, drawing, singing, photography, fashion designing, playing some wonderful instruments, just being creative scientifically or technologically, preaching the gospel,...
What is it? FIND OUT.
I want to say a point that's not popular in this part of the world.
3. When you're in a career and you know it's not working out, you know you always have this feeling of unfulfillment, there's this obscurity you always see when you look into the future of that career, please, QUIT. (Let me divert a little - it could even be a relationship. Please, I beg you. Pull your sandals, dust the sand off, hold it tightly under your armpit and RUN!)
I have a family-friend who studied computer science in the Southern part of Nigeria during his undergraduate days. He finished the course and perhaps still had this feeling of unfulfillment in the field. His passion had always been Mathematics. He finished that Computer Science programme, went to I guess the Eastern part of Nigeria to study Mathematics. The last time we met, he was looking very humble, calm and gentle. You know they're some courses that have a way of humbling you. I believe MATHEMATICS is one of them! He's also ready to go in-depth in it. Wow!
Mathematics is his passion and he went for it without cringing.
I see funny people and hear funny statements.
'Ehnn... My friend just opened a boutique. I must open my own'
Answer: Is that your passion? Check up.
- 'All my friends are going into the medical school and...'
Answer. Wait. Can YOU survive when you go into the medical school too? Find out.
-My friend is dead and I want to die too'
Answer: Beautiful! Since your friend is dead, don't you think you also need to die? #follow_follow (Sarcastic point)
So, I believe you get the point now.
Furthermore, there are some passions that don't contribute to your world, your career in the long run and may not help you to leave a legacy here on earth. What do you do with those passions? Reduce the time you allocate to pursuing those stuffs. They are many but just to mention a few.
For instance, passion for food. Eating and consuming everything consumable. You can't see food and take away your eyes from it. You have an uncontrollable appetite for food. Your mates cheer you up, respect you and remove their hat for you when it comes to food. My friend, this is not a good passion at all. You need help. Well, I can't help you. Don't ask me. Help yourself. Don't pride in this killer-passion.
Playing video games is another example. Some people are addicts to playing video games. Back then, I could play video games from morning till evening. Sometimes, I'll even care less of food! Please, don't allow the spirit the game of the game to get hold of you.
Also, watching movies and football matches (except for film makers, script writers and other Professional folks that need to spend quality time as it pertains to their career).
I watch films when I have the chance to do so. I also watch football matches if I'm chanced. I notice that I don't have the patience to sit down to watch a match for 90 minutes but I think I have the patience to wait for the highlights on YouTube which is less than 10 minutes atimes just to keep abreast if need be. Watching different season films and football matches without self-control is bad.
Time is life. Life is time. Be wise.
.
Lastly, through your passion, you should be able to use it to give glory to God, fend for yourself and your family, contribute maximally to the work of the Lord, care for those around you and also leave something for the next generation to benefit from.
Before I appreciate you for reading this little piece of mine, I'll want to ask you a question I do ask young folks:
THINK THROUGH
If this world will still be in existence in 150 years to come, what will people remember you for?
If you leave this world and you're forgotten, then you're dead. If you leave this world today and you're still remembered, then you're still living. How can you still be leaving in heart of people like Abraham Lincoln, Mother Theresa, Martin Luther King Jr, Matthew Henry, Winston Churchill, John Wesley and all the wonderful folks in memory lane?
In summary,
Seek a passion that'll make you 'IMMORTAL.'
Seek a passion that'll make you be more of a Contributor than an Accumulator.
Seek a passion that'll lighten your world and that's connected with eternity.
Don't just be crazy about making money or living in a big skyscraper and eventually dying like every mere mortal man.
Affect your world before leaving.
Thanks for reading this piece friend.
God bless you.
