Mexico Foreign Minister Luis Vinegary labelled the tariff measures “unjust and unilateral” but said it will continue to negotiate with the US to revamp the North American Free Trade Agreement.
French President Emmanuel Macron has launched a furious attack on Donald Trump, warning his decision to impose trade tariffs on the EU is illegal and could lead to war. The French leader will talk to US President Donald Trump on the subject later on Thursday, but that the decision on tariffs closes the door on other talks. But in a stunning outburst, Mr Macron claimed the US was responding to global imbalances with economic and commercial nationalism.
He said: “This decision is not only unlawful but it is a mistake in many respects. “Economic nationalism leads to war.”
Meanwhile, Canada, which will also be impacted by move, has also been quick to respond, with Foreign minister Chrystia Freeland announcing it will impose retaliatory measures against the US. It will impose its own tariffs that will cover C$16.6 billion in imports - some products will get 25 percent and others 10 percent.
