Acids are chemical substances which when added to water produces hydrogen ion. Acid can change blue litmus paper to red. This is a major test for acid.
Types Of Acid
Acid can occur naturally and can also be made in the laboratory.They can be grouped Into organic acid;
1) Organic acid include:
(a) lactic acid found in milk
(b) Citric acid found in lemon, grapes and oranges
(c) Acetic acid found in vinegar.
2)Inorganic acid include: Nitric acid,hydroelectric acid,sulphuric acid and carbonic acid
Physical Properties Of Acid
i) Acid turn blue litmus paper to red.
ii) Concentrated acid are harmful to the skin i.e.corrosive.
iii) They cause damage to metal.
iv)Acid taste sour.(Note:Do not taste acid).
v) Acid neutralise bases to form salt and water
Uses Of Acid
1) Acid are used to make car batteries, fertilizers and drug.
2) They are used to produce some important gases e.g.carbondioxide.
3)They are used as solvents to dissolve solid chemical.
